Abstract

"Focus on Tourism & Hospitality" piece on the Maine Office of Tourism (MOT). Its staff is the smallest in the country, and in a state for which the economic impact of tourism is huge, MOT's $7.5 million budget is well below the national average of $11.9 million. After slashing its tourism budget and losing $2.4 billion in tourism revenue, Colorado boosted its budget and now is said to recoup $13 for every advertising dollar. Maine has used research data from Toronto-based Longwoods International since 1996. Although the report might be the best indicator of Maine's tourism market, some in the industry say more should be done. With details on how the new Center for Tourism Research and Outreach at the University of Maine will expand on that research.
