Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a recent Federal Reserve Bank study that shows employment grew in Maine in 2004 for the third year in a row. The state's unemployment rate declined and per capita income increased, but by rates that were the lowest in New England. Exports were up 11 percent over 2003, below both regional and national increases. Most of the job growth was in education, health services, and retail. The state's housing market was booming. A Portland-based Critical Insights survey indicated that half the participants believe the economy is worse than a year ago, while 39 percent said it's about the same, and 10 percent said it was better.
