Abstract
"Capitol Update" piece on the various studies ranking Maine's business climate, with a focus on a new book that questions the validity of five nationwide rankings. "Grading Places," written by Peter Fisher and published by the Economic Policy Institute, concluded that most of the studies are driven by an anti-tax ideology. Christopher St. John of the Maine Center for Economic Policy agrees, noting that the importance is not a state's ranking but the methodology used in determining the rank. Bill Becker, executive director of the Maine Heritage Policy Center, said the broad weaknesses named in report after report prove that Maine's high tax burden is real.
