Abstract
Maine Eastern Railroad's scenic Brunswick-to-Rockland passenger train is in its first full season this summer, though questions remain about whether it can survive until it is joined by the Downeaster system. The state wants to extend the Boston-to-Portland Downeaster to Brunswick within five years and to extend passenger rail as far north as Bangor in 20 years. According to one estimate, the scenic train's per-trip costs are below $1,000, compared to the potential $6,000 in ticket sales it could generate each day. The train is seen by some as fulfilling a need for more commuter- and tourism-based public transportation in the state.
