Abstract
"Focus: Downeast Region" piece on the Boat Building Program at Washington County Community College (WCCC) in Eastport, commonly known as the Boat School. The program has drawn acclaim from the boat-building industry since its inception in 1969, but financial difficulties last year forced a one-year shutdown. Bill Cassidy, president of WCCC, hopes that a collaboration between the boat-building industry and the school will help keep the school going. Boat School instructor Dean Pike said that a focus on recruiting has produced the largest group of students in recent years. Ralph Stanley, an acclaimed wooden boat builder, said it gets harder every year to find qualified workers.
