Abstract

"Focus on the Midcoast" piece on Rockland's recent renaissance, which includes new chain and big box stores; downtown boutiques, art galleries and cafes; a new "Gateway Center" to spotlight the town; the expansion of the Farnsworth Art Museum; and the Breakwater Marketplace proposed at the location of Nautica Enterprises, a clothing maker that pulled out of town. A cleaner harbor and the demise of odoriferous fish processing plants have increased tourism, but residents want to hold on to their blue collar history and maintain the working waterfront. City Manager Tom Hall wants to create a central tax increment financing district in the former heart of the town's industrial waterfront to encourage re-use of former industrial sites. Details.
