Abstract
Skowhegan-based Gifford's Ice Cream, co-owned by brothers John and Roger Gifford, is the largest producer of ice cream in Maine. Last year, Gifford's hired Swardlick Marketing Group in Portland in a push to break into new regional markets. With a new, nostalgic packaging design, supermarket sales jumped 20 percent in March and April. Competition in regional markets is fierce. Jeff Shain of Shain's of Maine in Sanford has had success with his Sea Dog Biscuit, an ice-cream sandwich named after Portland's minor league baseball team. With details on how several Maine ice-cream makers are competing with companies that mass-produce the product.
