Abstract
"Focus on Energy" piece on Maine's air quality and an attempt by the state to cut vehicle emissions. Part or all of eight Maine counties were non-compliant for the federal eight-hour ozone standard in 2004. In May, Gov. John Baldacci signed a "cleaner car law" based on a progressive California law. Although there is a demand for hybrids in Maine, some car dealers say requiring 11 percent of all 2009- and later-model vehicles sold to be hybrid or super-low-emission will put an unfair burden on them, in a state where residents favor trucks and larger vehicles. With a guide to vehicle emissions terminology.
