Abstract

"Commentary" piece on the need to improve Maine's business climate, noting that Maine ranked 49th in the nation this year in the Small Business Survival Index. Maine's property taxes, which average 5.3 percent of a homeowner's income, are the highest in the country. Maine ranks near the bottom in capital gains tax rate, electricity costs, workers' comp premiums, and gasoline tax rate The Legislature needs to get serious about genuine tax reform to promote economic growth.
