Abstract

Portland real estate broker Bill Umbel has invested more than half a million dollars to open a rock club in Portland, a risky proposition. Former Skinny owner Johnny Lomba might run the nightclub half of the enterprise, with the restaurant run by the Blue Mango Cafe team. Portland is generally not on the touring circuit and many clubs have come and gone. Getting out an audience is also a gamble. An "alternative arts venue," the Space Gallery, opened when the Skinny closed, but director Nat May says it will never be self-sustaining. With details on Portland's "creative economy" and a selective recent history of Portland rock clubs.
