Abstract
FMC BioPolymer on Rockland's waterfront is the last carrageenan processing plant in the country and one of the city's largest businesses. Recently the city council rejected the company's landfill contract extension and forged a compromise that included an increase in the dumping fee from $3.50 to $22 per cubic yard and a lower disposal volume. FMC is working to recycle its seaweed byproduct by creating a fertilizer called Algefiber. FMC hopes not to use the landfill after 2006. With details on global pressures that might affect FMC and the company's work in creating new health care applications for its product.
