Abstract

Over the past few decades, roughly a dozen Maine lawyers have had the honor of arguing a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. In February, Bill Kayatta, a partner at Pierce Atwood in Portland, represented S.D. Warren against the Maine Department of Environmental Protection over the state's right to regulate the company's hydroelectric dams on the Presumpscot River. Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe argued for the DEP in the case, one that will affect interpretation of the federal Clean Water Act. With details on other Maine lawyers who have argued before the court and their rigorous preparation before doing so.
