Abstract
"Capitol Update" piece reporting that Maine's congressional delegation is vowing to petition the Federal Highway Administration to allow heavy trucks temporarily on interstate roads and bridges, as well as seek a permanent exemption. The issue was highlighted after a tractor-trailer truck in Bangor killed an elderly pedestrian earlier this month. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said forcing heavy trucks off the interstate and onto local roads puts Maine pedestrians and motorists needlessly at risk. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, said a study by the Maine Department of Transportation two years ago supported raising weight limits on the interstate, noting that such a change would save lives.
