Abstract
"Capitol Update" piece reporting that members of the Legislature's taxation committee are worried that the request by Cabela's Inc. to be exempt from collecting sales taxes on their mail-order sales to Mainers will lead other companies to follow suit. Seeking a decision from Maine Revenue Services on the sales tax issue, Cabela's has argued that by operating two separate corporations the company should not be forced to collect sales taxes on mail-order and Internet sales to Mainers. The issue became public when the developer told newspapers Cabela's would pull out of a proposed $75 million retail development in Scarborough that includes a 125,000-square-foot store. With comments by Sen. Joe Perry, D-Bangor; Rep. Richard Woodbury, I-Yarmouth; and Sen. Jonathan Courtney, R-Sanford.
