Abstract

Despite disappointment last winter, greater Portland retailers are cautiously optimistic about the upcoming holiday shopping season. Nationwide, consumer confidence is increasing, and strong local sales earlier this year made retailers less dependent on the holiday season. Most Maine Mall retailers count on the holidays for 30-35 percent of their annual profit, and some Congress Street merchants depend on it for half their yearly sales. Related box lists all the businesses on upper Congress Street.
