Abstract

"Business Maine" piece on the "Buy Local" campaigns in greater Portland. Officials in South Portland recently crafted zoning rules designed to encourage only small businesses in the Willard Square neighborhood. The new rules forbid drive-throughs and limit hours of operation, but may be mostly symbolic as there's little evidence that chain stores are interested in the neighborhood. Portland businesses recently launched a "Buy Local" campaign aimed at keeping the city's unique character alive and reminding residents that locally owned businesses return more of what they earn to the local economy.
