Abstract
"Focus on Education and Training" piece on job retraining programs in the state, most of which are organized through Maine Career Centers, run as partnerships of the state Department of Labor and social service agencies. Workers laid off from manufacturing, fishing, and other jobs are eligible for a range of federally funded retraining and unemployment benefits under the federal Trade Adjustment Act and can continue to receive benefits for up to two years if they are in job retraining programs. The program allowed many to attend college for the first time. Several formerly laid off workers tell their stories.
