Abstract

"Business Maine: Midcoast & Downeast" piece reporting that the cleanup costs for the former Callahan mine in Brooksville could top $25 million, according to an estimate by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. An investigation into the 150-acre site has confirmed earlier findings of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and zinc at the site, which could pose a health risk to humans. The mine, which was closed in 1972, was added to the federal Superfund list in 2002 when high levels of metals were found in soil and water surrounding the site.
