Abstract
The number of fitness clubs in Maine increased from 109 in 2000 to 188 in 2005, echoing a national trend, and clubs are working to differentiate themselves in a competitive market. The Portland and Bangor markets might be close to their saturation point. Given the costs of operating a fitness center, several entrepreneurs are focusing on niche markets. Joe de Silva, at Natural Fitness in Falmouth, focuses on one-to-one training that customers can continue at home. Robert Fiske Jr., owner of the Portland Athletic Club in Falmouth, focuses on tennis and fitness. With details on the women's fitness chain, Curves, and a men's model, called Nitro Fitness.
