Abstract
"Focus on Building & Real Estate" piece on the Maine School of Masonry in Avon, founded by Stephen Mitchell, 53, to address the dearth of new masons. He attracted one student last year and three this year, and teaches only one class. Some masonry companies have their own apprenticeship programs. Mitchell says the lack of masonry programs at the state's vocational and technical high schools hurts his recruitment efforts, and he's using his masonry business to keep the school afloat. He comments that the hard work of the career doesn't attract today's students, but he's planning a recruitment effort and is optimistic. With details on the New England School of Metalwork in Auburn, the Shelter Institute in Woolwich, Fox Maple School of Traditional Building in Brownfield, and the Yurt Foundation in Machiasport.
