Abstract
"The Food Issue" piece on Maine's specialty food producers, who employed 5,428 people in 2003. This year, the Augusta-based Small Enterprise Growth Fund and Portland-based CEI Community Ventures organized the Maine Food for Thought Forum at Bowdoin College to support investment in geographic clusters of specialty food businesses. A recent Brookings Institute study recommended that the state create a cluster development fund for traditional and emerging industries. Time pressures on small business owners can make collaboration and organization difficult. With details on how the composites and boat building industries have successfully organized and garnered cluster development funding.
