Abstract

"Counting Votes" piece commenting on some unusual election results from around the state. In Old Orchard Beach, voters may have scuttled plans for a $50 million downtown hotel when they narrowly defeated a measure to let the town sell a sliver of land to developer Tim Swenson. The eight-story hotel would be built above railroad tracks. Voters in Knox County elected the state's first female sheriff - Donna Dennison of St. George. John Jenkins, who was Lewiston's mayor during the 1990s, was elected mayor of Auburn. Jenkins became the first person to serve as mayor of both cities and is each cities' first African-American mayor.
