Abstract
Many of Maine's 22 for-profit Nordic ski centers are making costly upgrades to compete with the growing array of nonprofit ski areas, such as Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine Winter Sports Center in Presque Isle and Fort Kent, and Rumford's Black Mountain. Visits to the for-profit Sunday River Inn & Cross Country Ski Center in Bethel have shrunk by half since the 1980s. Some, like Harris Farm Cross Country Ski Center in Dayton, are successful but others have seen drastic drops in customers since the nonprofits opened.
