Abstract

"Focus: Technology" piece on the booming radio frequency identification market (RFID), questioning why Maine isn't a bigger player. Governor John Baldacci and state officials have put on hold plans to develop a cluster of RFID companies in the state. Jack Cashman, former commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development, said the state is waiting for the industry to mature. John Kendall, owner of Chipco Inc. and its spin-off, EmbedTech Industries Inc. in Raymond, is a long-time supporter of Maine's RFID industry. RFID innovators like Scott Cohen of Portland-based Parco Merged Media, and Mike Caron of Portland-based Tractec, both say they could develop more quickly with financial support at the state or federal level.
