Michael Gurau, president of Coastal Enterprises Inc. (CEI) Community Ventures, says in 2006, Maine's $7 million in venture investment ranked it 42nd in the nation and its 11 deals completed ranked it 38th. A report released last fall by the Brookings Institute, "Charting Maine's Future," emphasizes innovation spending and development of industrial clusters. It recommends creating a $200 million Innovation Fund. Venture capital has long been a catalyst for growth and job creation in urban markets.
