Abstract

"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on Jarmin Kaltis of Waldoboro, who fuels his car with used vegetable oil mixed with diesel and has started a new venture called Maine Bio-Fuel, with biodiesel production facilities in Carrabassett Valley and Portland. He built the plant using recycled parts like a $90,000 vacuum dehydrator that he found for $3,500 at a salvage yard. Most such plants cost a dollar per gallon of capacity, but his was built for 20 cents per gallon. With a photo-essay on biofuel production.
