Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece with a profile of Jesse O'Brien, owner of Kennebunk-based Down East Turf Farms. O'Brien and co-founder Chuck Christie harvest turf from April through December from around 300 acres of fields the company owns or leases in Kennebunk, Saco, Limington and Gorham. Seventy-five percent of the company's business comes from the popular spray-on process known as hydroseeding. O'Brien, however, strongly favors turf over hydroseeding. April was a difficult month for turf farmers, as late blizzards and a soaking nor'easter pushed the beginning of harvest back 10 days.
