Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece with a profile of Jean Hoffman, founder of Putney Vet, a pharmaceutical company that will develop generic alternatives to major brand-name veterinary medicines - the largest market is in flea and tick prevention. Based in Portland's Old Port, the company will then contract with a manufacturer to make the drug, then Putney will market and distribute its generics directly to veterinarians. Hoffman says the company's expansion will be rapid, and she plans to introduce three or four new generic drugs to the market over the next year. Hoffman, who plans to open a second office in New Jersey, says that attracting experienced pharmaceutical industry people to Maine may be one of her biggest obstacles.
