Abstract

"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on Scott Houldin, who is proposing a 700-megawatt coal gasification power plant for the former Maine Yankee nuclear power plant site in Wiscasset. Houldin is the power plant project manager for Connecticut-based National RE/sources, which is building a mixed-use development on the site of the former Mason Station power plant in town. The coal gasification plant, dubbed Twin River Energy Center, would be the largest power plant in Maine and the first such plant in New England. In response to critics, Houldin says the plant, which would generate electricity and also produce diesel fuel, would be noiseless, odorless, and emit 300 times less pollution than the former Mason Station. With details on gasification technology.
