Abstract

"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on Auburn-based Safe Handling Inc. Nationally, Safe Handling received the EPA Transportation Partnership's highest rating for carbon reduction. Recently co-founder Ford Reiche hired Andy Meyer, a charter member of the EPA's SmartWay Grow & Go, to manage his go-green effort. In transporting wet materials, the company devised a way to convert dry paper mix into wet materials in Maine, decreasing transportation costs and pollution. The company also uses "transloading," making use of both rail and truck transport. It has begun a pilot program to use part-biodiesel fuel in its trucks and is considering manufacturing the fuel. An increase in business led to the company's construction of the Port of Auburn Intermodal Transportation Facility, completed last year.
