Abstract

"Focus: Health Care: piece on the relationship between the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) in Biddeford and Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland, examining the reasons why the two don't collaborate more. As an osteopathic medical school, UNECOM teaches a holistic approach to medicine, whereas the more conventional allopathic medicine is the basis for MMC's teaching program. A recent proposal to partner on a new medical school program was perceived as a threat to UNECOM's osteopathic heritage and was vehemently opposed by D.O.s like Owen Pickus, an instructor and trustee at UNECOM. Vincent Conti, president and CEO of MMC, says the new medical school is a matter of developing a new curriculum that would focus on rural medicine, not just about brining more med students to Maine. With additional comments by Catherine Fredricks-Regahen, a medical student at UNECOM; and Jacquelyn Cawley, interim dean of UNECOM.
