Abstract

"Business Maine: Statewide" piece reporting that the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently handed Maine a $683,000 bonus for providing the state's neediest residents with food stamps. The bonus follows the department's threat that it would fine the state for giving food stamps to people no longer eligible for assistance. Last June, Maine's program had the highest error rate in the country. Barbara Van Burgel, head of Maine's food stamps program, said Maine was making mistakes because of the large number of people enrolled in the program. Van Burgel said the bonus money would be used to improve the system.
