Abstract
"Capitol Update" piece on a proposal by Sen. Ethan Strimling (D-Portland) that would raise the minimum wage to $7.70 next year and to $8.40 an hour in 2009. after that, minimum wage would be increased every year based on the federal consumer price index. Strimling acknowledged that some employers may have to raise the cost of their products or services if the bill passes, but said the increase will be a net benefit for the state. The Maine State Chamber of Commerce and representatives of tourism businesses, particularly restaurants, opposed the changes.
