Abstract
"Focus: Augusta-Waterville" piece on Mistie Bickford, the 22-year-old new owner of Eaton Mountain ski area in Skowhegan. The 40-year old ski area has struggled financially for years, and Bickford hopes to make it profitable this year by adding year-round programs. But Greg Sweetser, executive director of Ski Maine Association in Portland, said small ski areas are especially vulnerable to the high cost of insurance, energy and maintenance. Bickford is cautiously optimistic about luring skiers back to slopes, and plans to invest any profit back into the business.
