Abstract
"Focus on Northern Maine region" piece with an interview with Gritty McDuff's founder, Richard Pfeffer. Pfeffer, with business partner Jim Barresi and three others, purchased Aroostook Starch in Fort Fairfield in 2006. Pfeffer makes the nine-hour round-trip several times a month. After deciding that a potato vodka distillery in the County would not use enough potatoes, a plan evolved to grind potatoes to supply Aroostook Starch with raw material, possibly saving some to make vodka. When the Aroostook Starch closed, Pfeffer joined with Barresi, who was involved in the development of the original company. They hope to build a potato grinding plant and use culls from Aroostook County potato farmers. Potato starch has many applications, and demand exceeds supply.
