    Abstract

"Business Maine: Statewide" piece on a new report from the Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP), which shows that Maine's nonprofits pumped $7 billion into the state economy in 2005. The study shows the number of nonprofits in Maine continued to rise from 2003 to 2005, growing 23 percent to 2,667. Nonprofits' $7 billion economic contribution is about the same as the state's manufacturing and construction industries combined. The 289 foundations registered in Maine donated $92 million in 2005. In addition, over 360,000 Maine residents volunteered that year, ranking Maine 16th in the nation for volunteerism. Also highlighted in the report is Wiscasset-based coastal Enterprises Inc., which organized a lobbying effort to pass an anti-predatory lending bill, the Maine Homeowner Protection Act.
