Abstract

"Focus on Northern Maine region" piece on how integral snowmobiling has become to Aroostook County's winter tourism industry, with its heavy snowfall and 2,300-mile network of groomed trails. "SnowGoer" magazine recently ranked the County eighth on its list of the top 10 snowmobiling destinations in North America. Unlike the ski industry, snowmobiling depends largely on volunteers to groom the trails. This winter, many clubs ran through their budgets early. The system is fragile, relying on a grant program administered by the Maine Department of Conservation, and a revamped funding model is needed. With statistics on the industry.
