Abstract
"Focus on Northern Maine region" piece on Rhett Fox, who sold his convenience store to focus on his Fox Family Potato Chips, which he makes in Mapleton. He is struggling to become profitable, even in potato country, and says this summer will be "make or break time." He first started making and selling the chips out of his store, and was selling all he could make. After his father, who encouraged his new business, died of cancer, Fox invested $100,000 in packaging and equipment. Eventually a New York distributor picked up the product. The competition in the potato chip industry is fierce and transportation is an issue, with the fragile product taking up a lot of freight space. Fox needs an infusion of cash and is hoping the quality of his product will eventually lead to its success.
