Abstract

"The Third Sector" piece on the nonprofit community on Mount Desert Island, home to about 100 organizations. Lisa Horsch, director of development for Friends of Acadia, three years ago gathered about 20 colleagues to create a shared summer calendar to eliminate competing fundraising events. Today nonprofit leaders continue to meet as the MDI Nonprofit Alliance, and creative collaboration has resulted. Other such networks exist in Portland, Rockland, Bucksport, and Washington County. With details on these groups and their activities.
