Abstract
Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay has survived 192 years, most recently by building luxury boats. To diversify, owner Tim Hodgdon began using composite materials and opened a facility in Richmond to build yacht interiors for larger shipyards. The company plans to offer an apprenticeship program for students at the adjacent Richmond public schools. Hodgdon worked with the University of Maine's Advanced Engineering Wood Composites Center to redesign the U.S. Navy's Mark V patrol boat, building a fast but more cushioned boat called the Mako. With details on carbon-fiber boats.
