Abstract

"Business Maine: Southern" piece on Hannaford Bros. Co., which announced on March 17 that a massive security breach had exposed 4.2 million customer credit and debit card numbers from over 200 of its supermarkets, making it one of the largest retail data thefts in history. Maine banks and credit unions now shoulder the cost of reissuing thousands of cards at an expense estimated into the millions. The breach was unusual in that the thieves accessed the information while it was in transit from the card machines in checkout line to banks. Hannaford has since blamed the breach on illicit software, known as "malware," secretly installed on supermarket servers.
