Abstract

"Minding Your Business." The expansion of National and Fairchild Semiconductor on Western Avenue in South Portland is one of the ten most important business stories in Portland this century. National Semiconductor's billion-dollar investment will make or break the company's future, and by 1998 each company should have over 1000 jobs on its payroll. National's instantaneous-transmission computer chips and Fairchild's low-cost mass market chips will have effects on the computer market around the world.
