Abstract

"The Third Sector" piece on the effects of the recession on Maine nonprofits. Some of Maine's largest foundations have lost as much as 30 percent of their assets, though the full effect on grant-making budgets will not be evident until 2010. Nonprofits are also anticipating cuts in state and federal funding and a possible decrease in charitable giving. As innovative ways to support the nonprofit sector in the downturn, funders are launching new low-interest loan programs and providing services that help nonprofits assess their viability and consider mergers where appropriate.
