Abstract

"Focus on Greater Portland" piece containing an interview with Greg Mitchell, 48, Portland's newly hired economic development director. He spent eight years in that role in Lewiston, creating public-private collaborations that revitalized the downtown and established the city as a logistics hub. The position, which his predecessor left two years ago, has been elevated from the Planning and Development Department to the City Manager's Office. He speaks of Portland's ongoing projects, the proposed Portland Technology Park, the city's quest for a Pine Tree Development Zone designation, the city's commercial loan programs, waterfront zoning, federal stimulus money, and streamlining the regulatory review process. With a list of recent developments in Portland and financial snapshots of Portland and South Portland.
