Abstract

"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on Biddeford-based telecommunications company GWI. and CEO Fletcher Kittredge, who wants to raise money to leverage $32 million in stimulus funds to expand Maine's broadband network. Maine's Broadband Strategy Council will examine at least five such proposals, one submitted by FairPoint Communications, which is protesting GWI's competition. Many rural Mainers still have dial-up Internet access, and The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor finds it cheaper to load data onto a truck bound for Boston than to transmit it electronically.
