Abstract

"Focus on Western Maine" piece on Western Maine Mineral Adventures in Woodstock, which offers visitors a chance to sluice buckets of dirt and rocks for tourmaline, quartz, and garnet. A renewed interest in hunting for Maine gems, including a 2005 guidebook by the Maine Geological Survey, caused some mine owners to close their pits due to liability concerns. Business is up at operations offering guided tours, like Mineral Adventures, Poland Mining Camps, and Maine Mineralogy Expeditions in Bethel. The Maine Geological Survey and the Maine Mineral Symposium Association offer trips that sell out quickly.
