Abstract
An analysis of the statewide impact of the Brunswick Naval Air Station closure, which could mean a loss of about $891 million. Brunswick and Topsham are also dealing with reuse questions for the base, which has significant assets. A recently passed state transportation bond includes money to help redevelop the airport, possibly as a business for retooling planes. Southern Maine Community College and the University of Maine will launch the Maine Applied Technology and Engineering Center, and the Brunswick Renewable Energy Center will be another tenant. The base hotel and golf course also offer opportunities, though the closure and the 702 units of base housing are expected to deal a blow to the region's housing market.
