Abstract

Already facing a $30 million debt to the federal government for overcharging for Medicaid reimbursements dating back to 2002 and 2003, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew says payments this year to hospitals are $66 million over budgeted amounts. And increased participation in Medicaid due to the recession has increased costs for the current year by as much as $30 million. Finance Commissioner Sawin Millett believes that meeting the needs for the rest of the budget year could drain state reserves.
