Abstract

"Focus: Health Care & Wellness" piece on Maine Community Health Options, a startup, nonprofit organization that is licensed to provide health plans, competing with the state's largest commercial health insurer, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Among the reforms put forth by the Affordable Care Act is the creation of a private nonprofit health insurer, called a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan, or CO-OP. As a CO-OP, one of MCHO's goals is to deliver high quality care at lower costs., returning any surplus revenue to its members through lower premiums or expanded benefits. With a sidebar that explains MCHO's financing.
