Abstract
“Focus Transportation & Trade” piece on Portland’s cold storage capacity and whether or not it is sufficient to handle increased seafood imports. The Icelandic container shipping service Eimskip expects to start bringing about 5,000 containers through Portland each year, with the city being the company’s only U.S. port of call. Portland’s only cold storage facility, the Americold Logistics warehouse on Read Street, has plans to upgrade in order to accommodate Eimskip’s imports. Several Massachusetts-based cold storage companies are exploring the feasibility of expanding into Portland. Massachusetts has 59 cold storage facilities, compared to Maine’s 18. With a sidebar that discusses Pan Am Railways’ plans to extend its freight rail line to reach the International Marine Terminal.
